Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, due to a cerebral stroke

 

followed by irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.  He passed away peacefully at his residence in the Casa Santa Marta of the Vatican. On Easter Sunday, he made his final public appearance, giving his final Urbi et Orbi blessing in St. Peter’s Square, calling for peace in Gaza.

 The Vatican announced on Tuesday, April 22, that the body of Pope Francis, which is currently resting in a coffin at the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, will be moved to St. on Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m., Peter's Basilica (0700 GMT).  Following his passing, this is the next step in the rites of passage. ​

 His service of remembrance is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 in St. Peter's Square, where Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re is in charge. Following his wishes, Pope Francis will be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.  Notable mourners, including Prince William, US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and leaders from Germany, 



Poland, Spain, Argentina, and Brazil, are expected to attend.  Italy has declared national mourning for five days. Pope Francis thanked those who prayed for him and offered his suffering in exchange for world peace and people-to-people brotherhood in his final spiritual testament. His death has prompted tributes worldwide, with memorial masses held across continents, including Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific nations.  In his native Argentina, San Lorenzo de Almagro supporters paid him homage, highlighting his close ties to the region. 


Pope Francis was adored for his humility and reformist approach, which was reflected in his straightforward funeral arrangements and selection of a location outside the Vatican walls for his burial.
